one less wheel spinning

hi sisters!! (cause i don't think the men-folk, other than my hubs, read this.) so i am nearing the end of the second week of enjoying the ease that was brought on by my epic cooking day. several of you have asked how it's been going, so i'm here to report.

first off, we'll address the OCD/list maker tendencies that i have. i'm not proud. a few years ago i found a weekly menu form (breakfast/lunch/supper) on the Cheap Cooking website that i use to plan out our menus every single week. now, before you think i'm a good mom, let me preface this by saying i'm not a breakfast cooker, so that column looks something along the lines of pop-tarts every other day (because my kids would eat them every day if i'd let them) alternating with something else (usually cereal or muffins or cereal bars.) i'm not really a breakfast eater and they are way picky, so...ya know. lunches vary as well. luke has his own lunch menu schedule (which helps micah, who is the one who packs it) and the other two kids usually eat hotdogs or sandwiches and me, just whatever i can find. (that is also an area i need to reign in a little better.) next, i printed out a blank march calendar from my microsoft program. (we typically have a copy or two lying around somewhere because with having kids who refuse to share, we put everything except the toilet on a rotation schedule. forced sharing is total win, justsoyaknow.) Then I sat down with my inventory list and tried to make the best mix/rotation of foods that i could, and still accomodate the baseball schedule. (is it any wonder i am #1. insane, #2. unreachable by phone, and #3. completely out of touch with what is going on in my friends' lives.--Hey Lindsey! I didn't know you moved or that you were homeschooling!--Hey Darby! Thanks for the book rec of The Mission of Motherhood. It's the first book that i paid for on my Kindle.--Hey Tara M.! Thanks for the info on "farm shopping.")

ok, where was i? oh yes, under a mound of lists. see, i like to be able to see everything at a glance. I also like variety, so having an inventory list, a master monthly menu and then a weekly one (for general grocery shopping and so that the kids know what we're having) works well for me. it really is organized chaos. I'd let micah take a picture of me doing this, but i'm fairly certain that i don't actually show up on film. so, in my week, i do plan an out to eat meal once a week. i thought about doing sunday lunch, and occasionally we will, but i'm thinking that it may vary between saturday night and sunday. still working on what works best for us on that one. there have been some days that i had my menu all planned out and then that day, i just wasnt' feelin' it. the good thing is that it didn't matter. i had several other things that i could choose from b/c they were already waiting for me in my freezer. problem solved and it didn't come down to a last minute, "let's just go pick something up."

i still have plenty in my inventory for the moment. this is a pay week, so i'm going to pick up some ground hamburger/turkey and make and grill some hamburgers and then freeze them. i mean, they sell them already cooked in the freezer section. surely i can do it and make them healthier, right?

another thing i might suggest is browsing some of the menu planning sites that are out there and giving one of their 3-month subscriptions a try. they usually give you a shopping list and a prep list along with the menu suggestions so that it takes the guess work right out of it. If nothing else, it will give you a few items to add to your repertoire that you may not have had or thought of before. it helps break me out of the cooking the same ole thing every week or two rut. try e-mealz or 5Dinners1Hour.

thanks for the interest while i get it figured out. any mom on the go should give it a try for sure!

oh, question for my SAHM friends...if you had a job outside of the home before you had kids and now stay at home, do you ever plan on working outside of the home at a later time? i'm just curious.

you wanted something new?

surely you haven't tired of looking at the train in our toilet?! oh, alright. well, we had our last round of christmas and company this past weekend and we had the best time. my brother, my sister (in-law, but i love her like the real thing, but so that you know that my family tree really does fork and you know we aren't incestuous, sister in law) and my 2 nephews came to see us. the insanity wasn't in the fact that i had boys ages 6,5,4 & 3 all under one roof (not including 2 grown-ish men). the insanity was the fact that they brought their wii with them. first, let's talk about the mii's. for those of you not in the know (which was me until friday...or should i say mii??) a mii is an avatar that you make to look like yourself. yall, the one that they made of my mama is honkin scary. scary like it looks just like her. it's crazy!! now, to clarify my "grown-ish men" comment, let me just say that there was trash talkin. and not between the grown ups. between the grown ups and my 6 year old nephew, jamey. i'll admit. the worst was between me and jamey. i kicked his "pro" tail in bowling. and he got mad that i could throw a 93 mile an hour fast ball. but that's ok b/c i didn't get to figure out how to throw a screwball or a splitter. and to say that my arm was sore yesterday is an understatement. who knew i was that out of shape? of course, i tried my hardest to win (because i have no shame) and the word "cheater" actually came out of my husband's mouth. yep. we are hard core!! little sister was plenty spoiled by her aunt sherri. we had good food and good fun and what else could you ask for?

yesterday i got to go retrieve my christmas present from sam's. i was so excited. they are basically calphalon, but sam's brand. you have to do the whole seasoning thing and the whole she-bang. and they have a lifetime warranty. this better be the last set i buy. also, i'd like to take this little moment to brag on my hubs yesterday. it was my turn to take the boys to church. (we are alternating sundays and wednesdays b/c sister can't seem to manage to stay awake for 3+ hours...time it would take from getting her up, going and coming home without being a complete turkey and she will only fall asleep in her bed and taking her right now completely nullifies the purpose to be there.) anyway, during my morning, he did some dishes, did some laundry, took care of the sis, vacuumed the floors and cooked lunch. then, while i was off to do the grocery shopping, he did more laundry and put it away, all while having the 3 kids. oh, and i forgot to mention that he got the boys ready and got their church bags ready (like he does every week) while i was getting ready. he is a much better wife and mom than i am and i told him how much i appreciate him...and that he was giving me a bad name!!

and now without further adieu...
Menu Monday
(this one isn't anything special. basically i went through our pantry, fridge and freezer and decided to make as much as i could with what we had and only buy what we needed to fill in the holes. my grocery bill this time was TINY!!!)

Sunday lunch-hamburger helper
sunday night-leftovers

monday-becky out to PF Chang's with Ellen (our last supper before her air force stuff), pita bread pizza for every one else, AC, bottle, sweet potatoes and apricots

tuesday-chicken enchiladas (were in freezer made last time)

wednesday-grilled shrimp (made on this which i also got for christmas), corn on the cob, salad and bread

thursday-chicken casserole, mashed potatoes, english peas

friday-taco salad

saturday-grilled chicken, cream corn and salad

and in true becky tucker fashion, i haven't gotten any pics uploaded, so probably none of this in intersting without the pics to see it in person. but soon, chickens. soon. i must reclaim my house and get those taggie blankets in the mail. you DO still want them, right? they are all addressed, and i even took the time to choose the ribbon especially for each and every one. (so some are definitely more boy friendly!)

later sweet taters!!

Menu Monday

cause i'm bored and avoiding TV and all the ads today...

Sunday- chicken enchiladas, rice
Monday-meatloaf, mashed potatoes, peas
Tuesday-me out for ellen's bday, boys hotdogs
Wednesday-chicken casserole, butter beans, and some other side
Thursday-BBQ pork loin, baked beans, corn on cob
Friday-Swedish meatballs, rice, green salad

i'm tweaking my recipe for meatloaf today, so i'll try to remember to post it tomorrow. also, in all of that goodness, do you know what my kids will eat??? cereal. i tell them they have to try one bite. if they don't...cheerios. i just don't believe in sending them to bed hungry b/c they are huge, growing boys. but it does mean they only get one thing. i'm sure i should be stricter, but none of you have had an hour and a half stand off with a stubborn mule who will just hold a chicken nugget in his mouth...CHICKEN NUGGET...yeah. you do what you can.

Menu Monday

(actually my menu starts on sunday) i have been taking a serious hiatus from the cooking world. by the end of a season, i get burned out. and with everything that was going on with selling the house/visiting parents/preschool/work...i just let it go only cooking a real meal (meaning something that requires effort) 2-3 x a week. but now preschool is over, we are waiting on the house, i'm done with work on friday and sissy will be here in 3 weeks, i'm back on the cooking scene. i have no choice b/c i will need to save money anywhere i can with 3 kids. plus, i don't enjoy going out to eat with the 2 i have...i doubt i'm gonna want to drag 3 with me!!
